Weekly Quotation
For March 7 - 13, 2010

"I have a whole system for developing characters that I tell my students, but I don't always use the whole thing at the beginning of every book. In the short form, it goes like this:

1. Name her.
2. Place her on the planet (age, description, town, occupation, etc.)
3. Find out what she wants.
4. Dig up her past.
5. Torture her for her secrets.
6. And because action IS character, kick her out of the nest.

I usually do the first four steps to begin, then skip to 6 - the actual writing - then go back to 5 when I'm stuck. Frankly, I think it's the most important of all. Try it, and it'll unlock many a plot knot for you. Because if you know what one character is hiding, it changes everything."
~Julie Smith, American mystery author, at the Sisters in Crime Yahoo List, March 17, 2008

Jimenez (center) with me (L)
Say a little prayer for my good friend, Ruth, who is battling cancer. She's doing well in chemo right now, but being ill has surely sapped her writing energy. The doctors are hoping to knock The Big C out of her system and restore her to good health.

Lori & Patty & Jessie Go Shooting!
Bill's Gun Club in Robbinsdale, Minnesota, was the site of scary doings when the Book Addicts went out to target shoot.
Jessie and Lori load up magazines for Jessie's Glock and Lori's Beretta.
Patty had a great night shooting. Considering it was only her second time on a range, she shot the hell out of her targets.
I had a pretty decent night of accuracy as well, and we had a LOT of fun!

Appearance: Intergenerational Queer Storytellers

I appeared with Victor J. Banis in Madison Wisconsin, at A Room of One's Own to do a presentation and discussion about gay and lesbian writing. The event was sponsored by The U of W's LGBT Campus Center and was part of their Coming Out month festivities.
