Punxsutawney Phil says "Six more weeks of Lousy Winter!"

XX"I think people like puzzles. The element of mystery is what keeps us reading any book, but when you give it center stage, I think you get a real leg up in grabbing a reader's attention. Mysteries are entertaining, but a good mystery goes further in exploring moral questions. That's why I love fiction. It helps us explore what it is to be human. And also, in the mystery novel, you come upon a world in chaos but you know that by the end of the novel, you'll find a solution. In that sense, I think you can call them contemporary morality plays. You may not move from sadness to happiness, but you do find resolution, and that's comforting. In our normal, everyday lives, we don't get much resolution. Mysteries give us what CNN can't."
~Ellen Hart, mystery writer, in an interview with Lynne Jamneck, Fall 2005

Bringing Out Your Backlist & Older Books
Have you been writing for years and possess a "secret" drawer - or hard drive - full of unpublished manuscripts? Or did you publish some books, they went out of print, and now you have the rights back?

There's never been a better time to resurrect old manuscripts and out-of-print books and convert them to digital/electronic books. In the last two years, e-books for e-readers have become extremely popular. It's time for you to get with the new program!

See more on this topic in my blog at
"Babbling About Books, And More."

Great Time at Murder By The Book!

Had a terrific time at Portland's mystery bookstore. We had a nice-sized crowd, and the lively audience asked a ton of good questions. One of the owners, Barbara Tom, is pictured with me below. I highly recommend MBTB's wide selection of new and used crime fiction, great service, knowledgeable staff -- it's just a lovely store!

NaNoWriMo Begins

November is National Novel Writing Month, and I'm going to do the crash course to get as much of JUMP THE GUN out as possible. It's only two hours into Day One, and I've got 1,470 words to count (which are added to the nearly 15,000 I already had), so I'm working it!

Wish me luck!

Video of Jessie Chandler & me at True Colors

When I was in the Twin Cities last month for a joint appearance with Jessie Chandler at True Colors Bookstore, the Women Unlimited MN gals had a camera crew there. They put together a video clip that I have only just now seen! I think Jessie was mostly hiding in a corner though.
